Lionel Messi has been named FIFA’s 2022 player of the year as Argentina scooped all the major men’s awards after their dramatic World Cup triumph in December.
But the Puskas Award went to Polish player Marcin Oleksy, who scored a stunning, acrobatic volley in November in his domestic league for Warta Poznan against Stal Rzeszow.

He sent a stunning overhead volley against Stal Rzeszow flying into the back of the net with the help of his crutches.
Oleksy, an amputee, beat fellow nominees Brazil’s Richarlison and France’s Dimitri Payet to become the first Polish player to win the award.

He gave his speech in Polish, but according to website Notes From Poland, said: “It was hard for me to even dream of this”.
Australia’s Alou Kuol had also been in contention for the Puskas Award, for an Olyroos goal last June.
