Court remands 23-year-old in Ekiti over rape

An Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of a 23-year-old man, Abiodun Ogunyemi, at the custodial centre in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, over an alleged rape of an 18-year-old girl.

The defendant was arraigned on one count of rape.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Oriyomi Akinwale, said Ogunyemi committed the offence in Ado Ekiti and was arrested on January 28, 2021.

He said, “The offence is punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ekiti State 2012 within the Ikere Ekiti Magisterial District.”

The prosecutor urged the court to allow him to duplicate the case file and send it to the Directorate for Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

The defendant was represented in court by his counsel, Benjamin Aladesuyi.

The Magistrate, Mrs Dolapo Fasuba, ordered the remand of the defendant and adjourned the case till March 5, 2021 for mention.
