Elections in Kano like war, says KANSIEC boss

BARELY three days to Kano State local government elections, the Chairman, State Independent Electoral Commission, Prof. Ibrahim Sheka, on Tuesday declared that elections were always like war.

“Our elections are always warlike, while it is trailed and marred with chaos and uncertainty. Elections in Kano are always warlike,” he repeated.

Recall that hundreds of Kano citizens in recent years have lost their lives, especially during the conduct of 2007 local government elections under the erstwhile governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, which eventually saw the then ruling All Peoples Party winning all 44 local governments of the state.

Sheka made the statement at the opening of training for Civil Society Election Observers for the 2021 Local Government Elections, held at Mambayya House on Tuesday.

“Election in Kano state requires adequate security because it always looks like the entire world is coming to an end,” he further declared.

He said on the contrary, he had witnessed elections in Kogi, Gombe and Borno states, where they were conducted peacefully and people moved around as if there was no poll taking place.

“But in Kano, election is always rowdy; it is always like the entire world is coming to an end during election,” he added.

However, the KANSIEC chairman stated that part of the preparation for the Saturday’s election was praying to Almighty God to make the exercise peaceful and violence-free.

He however disclosed that election materials, both sensitive and non-sensitive, were ready, adding that the non-sensitive ones were already being distributed to various local government areas.
