Jt was a week to forget for some Nigerian players in Europe who failed to lift their team to victory but one standout player was lanky striker Paul Onuachu who scored a brace in Genk’s win over the weekend and his 12th goal of the ongoing campaign.
In the English Premier League, Semi Ajayi played all 90 minutes as he helped West Brom keep a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday, their first win of the season.
The defender had a stellar performance in the encounter as he kept the Blade’s striking force at bay in the encounter.
At Goodison Park, Alex Iwobi was on for 67 minutes as Everton’s woes continues losing 1-0 to Leeds United on Saturday in the EPL. William Troost-Ekong was an unused substitute in Watford’s’ 4-1 win over Preston North End on Saturday. The Nigerian has made seven appearances for the club this season scoring once.
In Italy, Simeon Nwankwo, played 90 minutes as Crotone lost 1-0 to Bologna on Sunday. Crotone have lost seven of their nine matches this season and are bottom of the Italian Serie A log.
In Germany, Taiwo Awoniyi, played all 90 minutes in Union Berlin’s 3-3 home draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday in the German Bundesliga. The former Nigeria junior international was fouled in the box for Berlin’s second goal.
In France, Moses Simon, played 45 in Nantes 3-1 loss to Olympique de Marseille in the French Ligue 1 on Saturday. The 2019/20 Player of The Season has not been able to replicate last season’s form for the club who currently sits 14th on the league log after 12 games. Simon came on for Imran Louza at half time. Simon has scored once in nine appearances for Nantes this season.
Josh Maja played 81 minutes as Bordeaux held defending champions, Paris Saint-Germain to a 2-2 draw away from home on Saturday. His compatriot, Samuel Kalu was not listed for the game.
In Belgium, Paul Onuachu, continued his goal scoring form, netting a brace in Genk’s 5-1 annihilation of Cercle Brugge in the Belgian top-flight on Saturday to help his team go top of the league table on goal difference.
The goals take his tally to 12 in 13 league appearances for the club. The lanky striker was on for 77 minutes and was replaced by his compatriot, Cyriel Dessers who failed to find the back of the net for the second consecutive game. Dessers has scored three goals in 10 league appearances.
Forwards, David Okereke and Emmanuel Dennis fired blank as defending champions, Club Brugge were held to a goalless draw against Royal Excel Mouscron on Saturday. Okereke played 55 minutes of the encounter and was replaced by Siebe Schrijvers while Dennis replaced Noa Lang in the 78th minute. Dennis was shown a yellow card in the 87th minute.
Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye failed to keep a clean sheet in goal for Sparta Rotterdam who lost 1-0 to PSV Eindhoven on Sunday. The goal was the fifth goal he has conceded so far in the Dutch Eredivisie this term.Okoye kept two clean sheets against RKC Waalwijk and ADO Den Haag.
