Family of man shot by ‘drunk’ police demands justice

The family of Chikere Obieshi, popularly known as JB, who was shot dead by a policeman at a birthday party in Lagos, have called for justice.

The incident that resulted in the death of Mr. Obieshi and a person yet to be identified occurred at a bar in Egbeda, Gowon Estate, at around 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Some people who attended the birthday party were also injured.

Shortly after the shooting, the officer fled the scene.

Representatives of the family said Wednesday at a press conference outside the deceased’s store in Computer Village that only justice will make up for the void caused by the murder of their son.

According to the family, the late businessman was described as a legitimate phone salesman who was invited by a certain Ifeanyi ‘Asiwaju’ Uchendu to his birthday celebration on Sunday, only to be shot dead by a police officer.

A family representative, Anayo Obieshi, told reporters that the policeman shot her brother while he was dancing and sprinkled money on the celebrant.

The family called the Inspector General of Police and the state police commissioner, to ensure justice for the deceased.

“All the things I used to do around the house, who wants to do them (now)? the deceased’s younger brother, Osigwe Stanley, said through tears.

“You who killed him, do you want to take his place, now that you have killed my older brother, what do you want to do with his corpse? Come and take the responsibilities from him now, if you can take half the responsibilities from him.”

“We need justice, we need justice, I call on President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, our honorable Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Senator Ararume, we need justice.”

The celebrant, also a businessman from Ikeja Computer Village, had hired the police to cover the party’s security.

During the party, the police officer, who was allegedly drunk, tried to shoot into the sky but accidentally shot those who were dancing and spraying money.

However, police said the shooting was an accident.

Command spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin said in a statement Wednesday that the officer, Mohammed Hussini, remains at large along with the birthday celebrant.
