SUPPORTERS of the All Progressives Congress under the aegis of Concerned APC Members on Monday, cautioned the Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker/Extraordinary National Convention Planning Committee against the imposition of candidates ahead of congresses scheduled to begin on Friday.
They warned that imposing candidates could lead to unintended consequences because party members were now more than ever before enlightened about their rights and privileges.
The spokesman for the group, Abdullahi Dauda said this in an interview with our correspondent, in Abuja.
He explained that while loyal party members have restrained themselves from taking steps capable of worsening the bad situation at hand, they would not sit idly by and watch democracy sacrificed to satisfy the whims of certain individuals.
Dauda said, “We have watched and listened to recent pronouncements by some of our leaders as we prepare for congresses.
“We would like to warn you against any illegal activity in the name of consensus. Yes, politics is about negotiations and conflict resolution but there are basic rules that must be respected for peace to reign.
“The era of people going into a room to write people’s names and announcing them as consensus or anointed candidates are gone. Every party member who is interested in any office should be allowed to canvas for votes and stand for election, that is what we understand as democracy.
He further said, “We must learn from our mistakes, imposition of candidates and the failure to follow our constitution made us lose so many states in 2019; how can we allow that to happen again?
