Man climbs electricity pole, electrocuted, police claims cable theft

A yet-to-be-identified man has died on an electricity pole in the Kobape area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.

It was learnt that residents woke up on Sunday to his lifeless body on the pole.

No one could tell when or why the victim climbed the pole, as he was not an official of the electricity distribution company.

A source said the deceased might have climbed the pole to commit suicide or steal cables.

“We woke up this morning (Sunday) to see the corpse. The death is mysterious,” the source added.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, adding that he was a suspected cable thief.

He said “The man climbed the pole, possibly he wanted to steal wires. I don’t think he wanted to commit suicide, because he had cut some of the wires. If he wanted to commit suicide, he only needed to climb the pole and hold the naked wire.

“But according to the information at my disposal, he had cut some of the wires. Maybe there was sudden power supply when he was cutting the cables.”

He disclosed that the corpse had been removed by the police, adding that the case was still being investigated.
