Mixed reactions as EFCC arrests 60 at ‘Yahoo Boys’ event in Ogun

Operatives of the Lagos Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday arrested 60 suspected internet fraudsters during an awards ceremony at the Conference Hotel in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The EFCC said an investigation revealed that the event tagged ‘Peer Youths Awards,’ was organised to reward high-level internet fraudsters.

The arrest has led to mixed reactions from users who commented on the Facebook page of The PUNCH, as they expressed their thoughts.

Some users blamed the EFCC for picking on fraudsters rather than arresting corrupt politicians while others pushed for the persecution of the suspects.

Oyewusi Babajide said, “EFCC is apparently fighting a one-sided war. Those who drive young guys into various crimes are enjoying their loot while all condemnation is for so-called yahoo boys and mainly most times for extortion.

“It’s a shame that a country can be enmeshed in such a serious manner of official corruption without any solution while the agency of the state would rely on proceeds of crimes for survival.”

In agreement, Ebere Nwanchi said, “Why not go after the politicians that loot our treasury instead of frustrating our youths that are trying hard to fend for themselves. “

Babalola Olamide said, “You guys should try to face these people one day. They can’t arrest politicians who are embezzling Nigeria future all they know is to follow ‘yahoo boys’ .”

“In as much as I do not encourage Yahoo, but I think the EFCC is acting irresponsibly. They make those arrests before looking for evidence to prosecute,” Austin Idedia commented.

Advising the EFCC, Reuben Ikechukwu said, “If they had truly organised an award night, please charge them to court and secure maximum sentences for all of them.”

“I can’t support internet fraud or fraud of any nature. But this ‘Yahoo’, can’t it be done in isolation? Must they live together, live in the same community, or party together?” Felix Dimaro asked.
