NERC and tariff increase

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission orders DisCos to suspend the September 1, 2020 electricity tariff hike for 14 days.

An official suspension order has been released to this effect to all the power distribution companies within the federation.

The regulator issued Order No. NERC/209/2020 around 10.30 pm on Tuesday, with the title, “NERC Order on suspension of the Multi Year Tariff Order 2020 for the electricity distribution licensees.”, signed by its chairman, Prof. James Momoh, and the Commissioner, Legal, Licensing and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye.

This is coming in line with the agreement reached between the Federal Government and Labour unions for the proposed nationwide strike to be halted, as earlier reported on Monday.

The order by NERC directs DisCos that from September 28 to October 11, all tariff charges will be reverted back to what was obtainable as of August 31, before the increase. A temporary reprieve to allow for further consultations and negotiations on the merit of the tariff increase.
