Obuh backs Eaglets for WAFU final

Former Golden Eaglets coach, John Obuh, is confident the national U-17 side will defeat Burkina Faso in the semi-final of the WAFU U-17 tournament on Friday (today).

Nigeria face Burkina Faso at the Stade Kegue Stadium in Togo in the first semi-finals of the tournament.

The five-time world champions qualified for the semi-finals with help from Ivory Coast, who beat Ghana 3-1 in their final Group B game on Tuesday.

The Eaglets lost 1-0 to the Ivoirians and drew 1-1 with Ghana, but the Nigerians, with one point, same as the Ghanaians, finished second in Group B on superior goals difference.

Speaking with us, Obuh said he was confident the Eaglets would book a place in the final.

He said, “I watched the Eaglets’ two games against Ghana and Ivory Coast and I predicted that if by chance they are given the opportunity to continue in the tournament they will make it to the final.

“The opportunity has actually come. Now, they need to take the game against Burkina Faso as if it is the final itself. They must be determined and avoid the little mistakes they made in their previous games. I’m very sure that they know that this is the only opportunity they have to play for Nigeria at this level, and they will not want to mess it up.

“I’m very sure they will come out stronger and better and go on to win the game. Burkina Faso shouldn’t be a threat to Nigeria even though they have done well so far.”
