Some injured members of the National Road Transport Workers Union (NURTW) in Ogun State on Tuesday sued the union’s national executive and 12 others in court for the conduct of the union’s elections in the state.
The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that other people interviewed in the trial before the National Labor Court in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, are executives from the NURTW State in Ogun State.
These include Mr. Ismail Mustapha, Alhaji Yusuf Bamgbola, Alhaji Kehinde Aliu and Alhaji Olayinka Banjo, among others.
NAN reports that the injured members are Haruna Adekonjo, Lukman Ajuwon, Jimoh Ajagbe, Funmilayo Odungbose, Sikiru Shoda and Jamiu Balogun.
The complainants, represented by Chief Olusesan Bankole, told the court that his clients were contesting the legality of the allegedly held elections for NURTW positions in Ogun State.
Bankole alleged that the national union body denied its customers the right to participate in the November 2, 2019 elections.
The board stated that the national union body had prevented its clients from participating in the elections by denying them the right to obtain the appropriate forms and other relevant documents.
Bankole said the election for Ogun NURTW took place on November 2 at 2 a.m. in a hotel in Ijebu-Ode.
He said the national body of the union was also in favor of the way he conducted the elections and asked the court not to recognize the result.
Bankole further requested the court to extend the time for submitting certain relevant documents to continue the case and to also respond to the request for jurisdiction made by counsel for the respondents, Mr. Olumide Akinbinu told the court that the application challenging the court’s jurisdiction to hear the case was filed on December 28, 2019.
Justice Peter Dada, however, called on the parties to explore an amicable solution to the issue of peace, saying that both parties would not be satisfied if the court were to be left to decide the issue.
“One side will certainly be sad while the other will be happy with the court ruling.
“It is when you settle the matter peacefully between you that the two parties will be happy.
“The matter is adjourned until May 17 for the hearing of the application,” said Justice Dada.
