Police begin investigation into death of UI student in soap factory

The Oyo State Police Command said on Thursday that it had begun investigation into the circumstance surrounding the death of Gbadebo Richard, a 21-year-old student of the University of Ibadan who was crushed to death when he fell into a soap-making machine, on Monday, during production at a factory owned by Henkel Nigeria Limited, makers of WAW detergent and bar soap.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Olugbenga Fadeyi, in a telephone interview on Thursday, said the matter requires discreet investigation as all angles must be explored to ascertain the actual cause of the deceased death.

He said, “There is no controversy about the incident. It happened at Henkel Nigeria Limited at Oluyole Industrial Estate, Ibadan. The Police has commenced discreet investigation into the matter. The corpse had been deposited in the morgue; medical officials would carry out autopsy on his body.

“As I said, investigation has commenced. The company had already issued a statement on the matter. The result of the investigation would be taken to the Commissioner of Police (Nwachukwu Enwonwu) as soon as the investigation is concluded.”

Also, UI Director of Public Communication, Oladejo Olatunji, who sympathised with the family over the death of their son, said “He was our student. The Students Union Executive Council had visited the family to commiserate with them on the sad loss. On behalf of the University Executive Council, Senate and the entire students of the University of Ibadan, I condole the family on the sad loss of Mr Gbadebo Richard. We pray that God would give the family the fortitude to bear the sad loss.”

Furthermore, the factory, in a statement made available to our correspondent on Thursday by its Human Resources Manager, Aliyu Jibril, said, it regretted the incident and is presently collaborating with the family and the police on the investigation.
