Police hunt Benue suspects for gang-raping teenager, filming act

The police in Benue State have launched a manhunt for three of the four young men who allegedly gang-raped a young girl in the Obi Local Government Area of the state.

The incident was said to have been recorded by one of the suspected rapists.

According to the police, the incident happened about three weeks ago and one of the suspects is already in custody.

It was gathered that the parents of the suspected rapists and the girl were shielding the incident from the police.

But it blew open when the sex video was released on the social media and became a trending clip.

Irked by the attitude of the parents of the suspects and the victim, Governor Samuel Ortom, whose attention was said to have been drawn to the ugly development, called on security operatives to investigate the incident.

The governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, on Tuesday, condemned the incident and described it as barbaric, dehumanising and unfortunate.

He stressed that the arrest and prosecution of the culprits would serve as a deterrent to persons, who engage in the defilement of minors and other crimes.

The governor charged the Chairman of the local government council and traditional rulers from the area to collaborate with security agencies to fish out the suspects and bring them to justice.

Meanwhile, the state police command has said that one of the suspects has been arrested.

A statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Catherine Anene, on Tuesday, said the incident happened on Sunday, January 24, 2021.

The statement said, “Information was received from a rape victim at Obi that on January 24, 2021 around 7.30pm, she was on her way to visit her sister at Itakpa-Ito and four armed men intercepted her on the way, dragged her into a room and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her.

“They made a video of their nefarious act and posted it on social media for public viewing.

“The victim was rushed to hospital, where she received treatment, and has been discharged.

“One of the suspects has been arrested and efforts are being made to arrest the other suspects currently at large.

“The command will definitely bring the perpetrators of such inhuman act to justice.”
