Police record 221 crime cases, arrest 352 suspects in five months: Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command on Thursday revealed that between March 8, 2021, till date it recorded a total of 221 crime cases with 352 suspects arrested within and outside the state.

This was revealed by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, in a press release he signed and made available to the newsmen in Bauchi, adding that the police were able to make the achievement through sustained operations, intelligence-led community-policing engagements and other crime fighting strategies.

Giving a breakdown of the crimes recorded in the state within the period under review, the police spokesman said that over 42 armed robbery cases were recorded for which 115 suspects were arrested, while 18 cases of kidnappings were recorded with 29 suspects arrested and 15 kidnapped victims rescued.

According to Wakil, “Fifty-nine (59) cases of rape, sixty-nine (69) suspects were arrested in connection with the cases. Thirty-five (35) cases of culpable homicide, sixty-six (66) suspects were arrested in connection with the cases.

“Seven (7) cases of attempt to commit homicide, five (5) suspects were arrested in connection with the cases. Thirty-five (35) cases of theft, forty-nine (49) suspects were arrested in connection with the cases. Twenty-five (25) cases of other offences, nineteen (19) suspects were arrested in connection with the cases.”

He stated that consequent upon the arrests made, police mopped-up lethal weapons from unlicensed individuals as crime preventive measures, adding that 88 firearms and 6,460 ammunition were recovered.

The mopped up firearms, according to the PPRO included 25 AK-47 rifles; one locally made SMG; one SMG; one locally fabricated AK47; one English Barretta and one Magazine; two P/Barretta; 29 rusted/unserviceable locally made P/cartridges; 27 rusted/unserviceable locally made revolver and one locally made Dane gun.

Wakil added that among the ammunition recovered are 874 7.6mm; 5,022 5.56mm; 113 9X19mm; 274 62.7mm; 177 38mm and 87 blanks, among others.

While one Golf saloon car and another Toyota Corolla were recovered within the period under review, Wakil stated that
19 different motorcycles were also recovered.

He also said that rustled animals, including 109 cows and 74 sheep, were recovered.

The PPRO said that a total of N907,760 and 11,500 CFA were also recovered, among other items, including offensive weapons like cutlasses, machetes, knives and others recovered by operatives of the command.

He, however, stated that, “it is pertinent to emphasize here (that) these aforementioned successes were made possible through information availed to the police from members of the public, who as partners in progress with the Nigeria Police share our desires and aspirations to enable a safe and secure environment for all residents in the state.

“The Command has put in place crime preventive measures which includes: visibility policing, community partnership, constant raids of black spots, regular foot and vehicular patrols, surveillance on buildings and vulnerable areas, stop and search, and intelligence led policing through partnership with sister agencies and other non-governmental organizations in order to nip in the bud all forms of crime and criminality and also to flush out their hideouts in the state.”
