Rescue our democracy, PDP govs beg National Assembly

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum has appealed to the National Assembly to rescue Nigeria’s democracy by passing necessary amendments to the Electoral Act.

Specifically, the forum urged the lawmakers to rise above partisan politics to pass the amendment to allow for the electronic transfer of election results.

This was contained in a statement titled, ‘Electronic Transmission: PDP Governors Forum Tasks National Assembly Conference Committee To Rescue Nigeria’s Democracy… Asks NASS to be guided by patriotism and national interest.’

It was signed by the Chairman of the forum and Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, in Abuja.

The PDP-GF enjoined the legislators to harmonise the different versions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bills and give the Conference Committee a clear mandate to hearken to the wishes of Nigerians and be guided by the national interest, “particularly on the issue of electronic transmission of results.“

The statement read in part, “The Forum insists that a further delay in passing and assenting to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill will do grievous and irreparable damage to preparations for the conduct of the 2023 elections in Nigeria.

“The PDP-GF requests the Senate and House of Representatives Conference Committee when set up, to adopt the House version of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill on the issue of Electronic Transmission.”
