The Abuja Federal High Court sentenced the former secretary of national publicity of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, leader Olisa Metuh, to seven years in prison. In a judgment by Justice Okon Abang, the court also ordered Metuh to pay a total of 375 million naira to the coffers of the federal government.
Justice Abang ordered that his business, Destra Investment Ltd, be liquidated with all funds to his credit forfeited to the government. Metuh and his company have been found guilty of all the money laundering charges on seven counts brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
The court found them guilty of illegally receiving 400 million naira from the Office of the National Security Advisor of ONSA before the 2015 presidential election, without approval or performance of a contract. Metuh was also found guilty of participating in an illegal transaction involving the exchange of $ 2 million, in violation of existing financial regulations. While he was sentenced to seven years on counts 1, 2, 4 and 7, count 5 gave him five years on count 3, three years on counts 5 and 6. The company was ordered to pay N25m for both counts. 5 and 6 of the prosecution. The court ruled that the sentence would be carried out simultaneously from today.
