Two nurses have been confirmed dead, while 10 others sustained varying degrees of injury in an auto crash that occurred on Sunday on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
It was gathered that the lone accident, which involved a white Toyota Hiace with number plate OG49A07, happened at Akinale village in the Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.
It was learnt that the bus was conveying one male and 17 females as of the time of the crash.
It was gathered that occupants of the bus were nurses, who were all heading for a party to honour the matron of one of the hospitals in Abeokuta.
The two dead victims were from the Ademola Hospital, Ijemo, and the General Hospital, Ijaiye, both in Abeokuta.
The spokesman for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the crash.
Akinbiyi said in a statement that one of the survivors accused the driver of being on top speed and using a mobile phone at a sharp bend.
Akinbiyi added that the driver lost control and the bus somersaulted several times.
He said no fewer than 10 persons sustained varying degrees of injury aside from the two dead victims.
The TRACE spokesman stated, “According to one of the survivors, the driver was on top speed and was using his mobile phone, while negotiating a bend. He lost control and the bus somersaulted several times.
“The injured victims were rescued and taken to Hope Hospital, Adigbe, before our arrival. The dead bodies have been deposited in the Ijaye General Hospital’s morgue.
“The occupants of the bus were nurses, who were heading for a party to honour the matron of one of the hospitals in Abeokuta.
“The two dead victims were also nurses in Ademola Hospital and General Hospital, Ijaiye.
“While the TRACE Corps commiserates with the families of the victims, motorists are again enjoined to avoid excessive speed, especially during the rainy season, as well as the use of mobile phones due to distraction and the attendant consequences.”
In a related development, a teenager and one other person, on Monday, lost their lives, while a passenger sustained injury in an accident on the Ijebu-Ode/Benin Road.
The crash involved a Toyota Sienna with number plate MUS 264 XV and a Dangote truck.
Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident in a statement, said it happened around 11am and involved five persons.
He said a teenager and a woman lost their lives in the crash.
Akinbiyi added that the injured victims had been taken to a hospital Ijebu-Ode, while the corpses had been deposited in the mortuary of the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode.
He said, “According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the commercial vehicle was heading for the eastern part of the country from Lagos, when he lost control due to excessive speed, having been warned by commuters in the vehicle, before colliding with the Dangote truck, which was parked off the road.
“Unfortunately, the driver of the Sienna vehicle ran away after the accident, while two commuters, a teenager and an adult woman, lost their lives.
“Coincidentally, the deceased woman was said to be the one who challenged the driver for speeding, while the teenager was in the vehicle with her father.”
He added that the vehicle had been moved to the Omu Divisional Police Station, Ijebu-Ode, for further investigation.
