Thousands of bank customers in Delta state were on Tuesday stranded after commercial banks refused over-the-counter withdrawals (OTC), two days into the easing of lockdown directive by the State government.

Large gatherings of customers were noticed at the gates of most banks and ATM galleries in Asaba, the state capital ignoring precautionary measures of social distancing.

According to a worker at the First bank, Nnebisi road (name withheld) the large crowds witnessed outside the bank was to discourage large gatherings in banking halls.

Canopies were however set up within the bank’s premises to shelter customers who were allowed into the transaction hall.

Maximum of five persons was allowed into the bank even as the volume of deposits was more than over-the-counter withdrawals.

We report that many customers were referred to automated teller machines noting that several ATMs did not dispense cash.

Meanwhile, Delta State government has advised whistleblowers to report persons flouting directives aimed at combating COVID-19 pandemic in the State.

A statement from the Secretary to State Government, Chiedu Ebie yesterday said all whistleblowers are guaranteed full protection adding that channels will be communicated to the public on how to make their report.
