The Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation has urged African countries to implement a child-friendly justice system to curb the growing menace of rape.
The Director, Overseeing the Office of the Director-General, Mrs Osaro Osayande, in a statement to mark the International Day of the African Child, lamented the uncontrollable spate of sexual violence, manifesting in the form of rape, inflicted on the African child.
She said, “CBAAC wishes to lend its voice against all forms of sexual violence, including rape. The centre is in support of the implementation of a child-friendly justice system across the continent. Rape is a traumatic experience that causes psychological, emotional and physical pains to its victims, together with its adverse effect.”
She said the International Day of the African Child is celebrated on June 16 to honour in memory of those killed as a result of the student uprising in Soweto, South Africa in 1976.
This year’s theme for the DAC commemoration is, ‘Access to a Child-Friendly Justice System in Africa.’
