WIFE of Osun State Governor, Mrs. Kafayat Oyetola, has said the state does not lack relevant laws required to end rape and sexual violence.
Mrs. Oyetola disclosed this while speaking on the floor of the State House of Assembly during a visit to the lawmakers on Wednesday.
Oyetola said the visit was to seek the support of the lawmakers on the issues of rape and sexual violence.
She urged the House to amend the law establishing the Amotekun Corps to legally empower members of the security outfit to use their intelligence to detect and arrest perpetrators of rape and sexual violence.
The governor’s wife said, “Although we have the Violence against Persons Prohibition Act 2015 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which has not been domesticated here. I must say that our state is not lacking in the relevant laws required to exterminate conducts such as rape and sexual violence in the state.
“The reality is that we still have the prevalence of these conducts and the incident is assuming a proportion that threatens our peace and development as a state.”
Responding, the Speaker of the House, Timothy Owoeye, said for rapists not to escape justice, investigators must use forensic analysis to hold perpetrators accountable for their crime.
Owoeye added that with the increase in gender based violence, the state must fast-track its prosecution process.
