Reactions have trailed Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong’s move to Watford from Serie A side Udinese.
The Championship side announced Troost-Ekong’s capture on their website on Tuesday.
He signed a five-year-deal which will keep him at Vicarage Road till 2025.
“Nigerian international defender William Troost-Ekong has completed a permanent transfer to Watford, the Hornets are delighted to announce. He will wear squad number 5,” Watford said.
Troost-Ekong, who played for Tottenham Hotspurs and Fulham at youth level, said the Hornets provide him the chance to achieve his dream of playing in the Championship.
“I believe in the project for Watford to get back into the Premier League,” the 27-year-old told BBC Sport Africa.
“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League and Watford has given me the platform now to get there. Looking at the squad, I believe we have the quality to do it.
“I’ve always made tactical decisions for my career and this felt like the right step now for me and my family.
“As for my international future, I have shown what I can add to the Super Eagles. I have consistently contributed to the team’s success in the last five years and have had the pleasure of captaining the team.”
However, some fans queried the 27-year-old’s decision to leave a Serie A side for a second-tier club in England, describing the move as a demotion.
“What’s in it for you Troost? Hope the pay is much better because in my opinion, it’s a step down for a World Cup player to leave the Serie A for the Championship. You are one of the most senior Super Eagle now. All the same good luck,” @EbirienO tweeted.
Paul Alabi added, “From Udinese to Watford? Championship football, I doubt it’s a good move.”
“From Seria A to Championship? This is rubbish,” Ighose Cimon also wrote on Twitter.
“Wrong move… Awii, Semi (Ajayi), Junior Pius, (Kevin) Akpoguma all play at a level our national team deserves. Championship is a step down. Semi Ajayi was arguably best CB there last season still couldn’t guarantee him an AFCON place. I am so disappointed,” @OfficialAfeez also added.
This was further reiterated by Adamu Muftawu, who wrote, “Moving from Serie A to Championship? A backward step I guess.”
Troost-Ekong played 66 times in the two seasons he spent with Udinese.
