Liverpool FC manager, Jürgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports in the pre-match interview of the Liverpool vs. Leeds United game, said his opinion hasn’t changed about the proposed European Super League.
“My opinion didn’t change [since 2019],” the German said. “I heard for the first time about it yesterday. We got some information but not a lot, mostly just the things you read in newspapers.”
He acknowledged the frustration of the fans who are opposed to the ESL, saying, “It’s a tough one. People are not happy, I can understand that, but I can’t say too much more. We were not involved in any process. The boys didn’t do anything wrong other than not winning all the football games and I want people to understand that.”
Klopp said he couldn’t speak more about the issue until there’s more information. “I don’t know exactly why the 12 clubs did it,” he said.
Commenting on the Liverpool supporters who had hung banners at the club stadium in protest, Klopp emphasised that he and the players knew nothing about the club’s decision to sign up for the ESL.
“The most important part of football are is the supporters and the team. We have to make sure that nothing gets in between them. Because I heard we put banners down at Anfield. The players didn’t do anything wrong.”
In 2019, Klopp stated: “I hope this Super League will never happen. With the way the CL is now running, football has a great product. For me, the Champions League is the Super League [but] you do not always end up playing the same teams.
Klopp urged the club supporters to keep supporting the team, while also admitting that “some things have to change” in football.
Last season, the German was asked about the idea of a European Super League, and this was his response: “I hope this Super League will never happen. Why should we create a system where Liverpool faces Real Madrid for 10 straight years? Who wants to see that every year?”
