Ex-Napoli coach tips Osimhen for support striker role

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen tests positive for COVID-19

Former Napoli manager, Gianni Di Marzio, says Victor Osimhen still has a lot to learn and thus should not be leading the Partenopei attack.

Di Marzio, who is also an Italian transfer market expert, while speaking on Bello del Calcio on Canale 21, opined that Napoli overpaid for the Nigeria international, who is yet to hit the ground running in Naples.

The 22-year-old joined the Italian giants on a five-year-deal for an African record €81m, including add-ons, after an impressive debut season at Lille, where he scored 18 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions.

Osimhen’s first season in Serie A has been plagued with injuries and some other health issues and has struggled for form for most part of the season, scoring just five goals in 23 appearances across all competitions.

Di Marzio however said that the Napoli number 9 was not worth more than €15m and can only be used as a backup striker.

“Osimhen? He has to mature, I have often said.

“He shouldn’t be evaluated not for how much he has been paid; he is a boy with a physique who has to learn movements that no one has ever taught him. In Nigeria, as I see it, they have not.

“He is not a player to be bought at high figures, he can be worth €10/15m, he must mature and in a high-level team he can be a good alternative to the starting forward,” Di Marzio said.
