Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri condemned the assassination of an All Progressives Congress (APC) member in the state.
The assassinated politician, Sunday Frank-Oputu, was shot dead at his Yenagoa residence by gunmen on Tuesday night.
Diri, in a statement from his spokesman, Daniel Alabra, on Wednesday in Yenagoa, condemned the murder.
He ordered the police to catch the killers.
The governor, who was quoted as condemning the murder at the 73rd meeting of the State Executive Council, described the incident as highly unfortunate and unacceptable.
“Let me tell you that killing doesn’t settle scores. We cannot bequeath a state of murder to our children,” the governor said.
“Let’s build our brothers and sisters, and not to kill them,” he added.
Mr. Diri expressed his condolences to the family of the murdered politician, on behalf of the Bayelsa State Government.
He said the state government and security agencies would do “everything in our power” to find the killers and bring them to justice.
“Our state has been very peaceful and there is no reason for any man to take another’s life,” he said.
The governor called on politicians to do politics without violence.
Governor Diri also condemned the demolition of houses belonging to a member of the House of Representatives and that of his brother in the community of Aghoro, Ekeremor Local Government Area.
He announced the dissolution of the community leadership in Aghoro.
The perpetrators would be brought to justice to deter others, he said.
He called on the people of the state to embrace peace at all times and learn to be their brother’s keeper.
