The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kaniye Ebeku, has warned that any principal caught collecting illegal levies for 2020 Basic Education Certificate Examination will be sanctioned.
Ebeku said this during a meeting with zonal directors, Rivers State representatives of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools and All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools in Port Harcourt on Monday.
“I am aware that some principals in the junior secondary schools have been charging various sums of money for BECE for reasons best known to them.
“Please, use your platform and appeal to your members and colleagues. Please save your career, protect your office by not being moved by the temptation of doing what has been outlawed,” he said.
Ebeku announced that the registration of candidates for the examination had been extended to Friday, August 28, 2020, explaining that the extension followed pleas by principals and administrators of both public and private schools to enable them conclude necessary processes of registration for their candidates.
