The Nigeria Football Federation is expected to get the sum of N1,231,725,243 from the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development for the 2021 fiscal year.

The Ministry of Sports proposed the sum of N181,104,352,458 to be spent in the 2021 fiscal year.

In the budget which was presented by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to the joint session of the National Assembly on October 8, the sports ministry’s budget, represents 1.38 per cent of the country’s total budget of N13, 082,420,568,233 for the year.

The budget has yet to be passed by the National Assembly.

The budget breakdown document which was gathered by our correspondent shows that the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports headquarters will receive a total of N12.906,730,121 while the sum of N164,316,342,783 has been earmarked for the National Youth Service Corps, the largest of the ministry’s appropriation for the fiscal year.

The sum of N1,730,179,597 has been set aside for Citizenship and Leadership Training Center while in sports, the sum of N1,231,725,243 has been appropriated for the NFF expenses for 2021.

The NFF however will spend the bulk of their budget appropriation on sporting activities for the year which amounts to N755,495,006 while a total sum of N106,071,322 will be spent on salaries.

This comes after the postponement of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to 2022 for the men’s senior national team but there will be qualifying games for AFCON and 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Other expenses include – purchase of buses – N45m, medical expenses – N1.5m with N2.5m set aside for publicity and advertisement.

Also, the sum of N919,374,741 has been earmarked for the National Institute for Sports.

The NFF budget constitutes 0.68 per cent of the N181.1bn presented by the sports ministry for approval.

The 2021 budget proposal is a 5.25 per cent increase in the N172,066,527,148 which was passed into law by the National Assembly December last year.

In the 2019 fiscal year, the ministry got N126.55bn with the NFF receiving N1.12bn; NIS – N498.21m; the NYSC – N111.6bn; the ministry headquarters – N7.9bn while the Citizenship and Leadership Centre got N1.31bn.

The budget breakdown shows the sports ministry will spend 94.22 per cent (N170,634,907,391) of the total budget on personnel and overhead cost, which includes salaries, wages, allowances and social contributions while the other 5.78 per cent will go to capital expenditure.
