CAFCL: Reach Group Stage, Collect $40,000 Each; Wike Tells Rivers United Players

Rivers United players will pocket $40,000 each should they beat CAF Champions League title-holders Wydad and qualify for the group stage, Sports commissioner of oil-rich Rivers State Chris Green said Friday.

Nigerian league champions Rivers United welcome Wydad Casablanca from Morocco in a CAF Champions League playoff first-leg clash Sunday in the southern city of Port Harcourt.

The overall winners over two legs will advance to the group stage of the competition.

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike rewarded each player with $20,000 for winning the Nigerian league for the first time in their history in June.

“The Governor has also announced that if you qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, you will receive $40,000 (41,000 euro) each,” Green told the team.
