The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has expressed concern over the growing number of political parties in Nigeria saying it had made the conduct of elections cumbersome.
The commission which said it can deregister parties that fail to meet the constitutional threshold embedded in the 4th alteration to the constitution, however, called on Nigerians to hold a national conversation on the number of political parties and the requirements for their registration.
INEC National commissioner and chairman of information and voter education committee, Festus Okoye who stated this in said the meeting should also determine whether over a 100 political parties could be accommodated in the nation’s electoral process.
