The Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE) has called for a sustainable process to mitigate the effect of flood on roads.
This formed the consensus of speakers at the second Engr. S. O. Fadahunsi Memorial Lecture in honour of a former registrar and president of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), held in Lagos via zoom, with the theme: “The Impact of flooding on the sustainability of Roads in Nigeria”.
The guest speaker, Prof. Adelere Adeniran, said road planning and design should be based on international best practices and guidelines, while considering the local flood flow patterns which focused on the floodplain hydraulics and related ecology patterns.
The academic from Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, said Nigeria has a comprehensive set of road construction standards, which are not adhered to by some states and local governments.ADVERTISEMENT
The National Chairman of the association, Olalekan Ajani, said the lecture was inaugurated to draw attention of governments and the public to issues that affect the environment from the engineering point of view.
James Olowe, the chairman, Board of Trustees, NIEE, said the theme of the lecture was apt for the season, especially as some parts of the country were experiencing flooding, which had destroyed roads and cut off a vast population of the people and food supply
