Residents of Kano State on Monday defied the curfew imposed by the state government to celebrate the victory of the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Yusuf Abba, as the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

Videos show the residents in large numbers jubilating the emergence of Abba despite the curfew imposed.

Reports states that Kano State government had imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew with a view to avoiding a breakdown of law and order following tensions generated from the collation of results of the Governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Mallam Muhammad Garba, said the decision was “to prevent hoodlums from causing chaos in the already tense situation.”

According to the results declared by the Returning Officer in the State, Professor Ahmed Ibrahim, the NNPP candidate polled 1,019,602 votes to defeat his closest rival, Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 890,705 votes.
