One person is feared dead and many injured in Bayelsa State following a bloody clash involving two rival cults in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The groups involved in the clash could not be ascertained, but sources said some suspected cult members filed out in large number from Yenagoa metropolis and headed for Obele Street where the bloody clash ensued on Monday.

An eyewitness claimed that during the clash, an unidentified man was killed and some other persons were injured.

It was also learnt that on their way to Obele, the hoodlums who were armed with weapons, shut down business activities at Amarata and other adjoining areas, shooting indiscriminately.

A man, who identified himself simply as Isaiah, said a certain cult came in their droves and forced shop owners in Amarata to clos as they released volley of bullets into the air.

He said after they had succeeded in creating panic, the hoodlums left the area and stormed Obele where they killed a resident and injured other persons.

The Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying it was rival cults that clashed in Obele.

Spokesman for the command, SP Asinim Butswat, confirmed that one person was killed during the clash in Obele area of the state capital.

He said, “The clash took place in Down Yenagoa. It was a rival cult clash that claimed the life of one person and investigation is ongoing.”
