Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, said the state has recorded its first COVID-19 death.

Makinde made the disclosure via a post on his Twitter handle on Wednesday evening just as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control announced one new case in the state bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 17.

According to him, the patient died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, before his confirmation test for the virus was out.

He added that contact tracing of the deceased had since commenced.

The governor said, “The COVID-19 confirmation test for one suspected case came back positive. The patient died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, before his result came out today (Wednesday). Contact tracing has already commenced.

“As reported earlier, one confirmed case was transferred to Lagos. So, there are currently five active cases in Oyo State.”

He urged people who have come into contact with any COVID-19 case in the state, those who returned to the country from overseas within the last month, those with respiratory symptoms, amongst others to go for a test at the state walk-in coronavirus test centre.

“Please, keep following the directives of the Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force. Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, regularly. Also, continue to maintain social distancing. Gatherings in Oyo State are limited to a maximum of ten persons,” he added.

Meanwhile, 91 new confirmed coronavirus cases have been recorded in Nigeria, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 873.
