A man, whose identity was not known yet, on Wednesday in Osogbo, jumped into River Osun, causing panic among the residents that witnessed the incident.
The man reportedly drove his motorcycle to the middle of Gbodofon bridge, along Gbongan/Osogbo road around 4:19pm, received a call on his mobile phone, and thereafter threw the phone into the river before he took a plunge.
When newsmen arrived the scene of the incident, a motley crowd which had gathered, watched helplessly, as a police operative took away a motorcycle with the number plate PKA 915 VI, reportedly driven to the spot by the man.
A commercial motorcyclist, Rasaq Olagunju, who spoke to newsmen at the scene of the incident said he was near the bridge when the man arrived and parked his motorcycle.
Olagunju said, “I didn’t immediately regard his presence on the bridge as important, but I began to take note of his movement after he brought out his phone and received a call. He was shouting on top of his voice.
“I could not tell what he was saying because of the noise of vehicles moving along the road at the time. He later threw the phone into the river and jumped from the top of Gbodofon bridge into Osun river.
“He did not even switch off the ignition of the motorcycle. He only parked and took a call before he jumped into the river. We are all confused. The man had his clothing on before he jumped into the river.”
The Administrative Officer of Osun State Fire Service, Ibrahim Adekunle, said an officer of the service going home saw a crowd on the bridge, alerted the office.
He said, “we immediately deployed men to search for him but the situation is not very promising. The water level is high but we have commenced search.”
When contacted, the spokesperson of Osun Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, also confirmed the incident, saying there was ongoing effort to search for the man.
