A former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday donated N50m to victims of a fire incident that ravaged the Katsina Central Market on Monday.

The All Progressives Congress leader announced the donation shortly after visiting the market and seeing the extent of destruction.

He urged the victims to see the incident as an act of God, imploring them not to be weighed down by the disaster.

He also suggested that trading activities at the market should not stop because of the incident.

Tinubu urged the market executive to ensure that the victims were properly taken care of.

He said his visit was to sympatise with the people of the state over the burnt market and commiserate with the victims.

Meanwhile, a 43-year-old Islamic teacher, Muhammadu Abba, was among 34 suspects paraded on Wednesday at the Katsina police headquarters for alleged looting during the fire incident.

Abba’s wife allegedly reported him to the police after he stuffed looted goods under one of the beds in their house.

A spokesman for the police in the state, SP Gambo Isah, said Abba was consequently arrested.

He said, “This man, Muhammadu Abba, is an Islamic teacher. He teaches pupils in the local Islamiya school. Yet, that did not stop him from looting items during the fire incident at the central market. His wife reported him to the police that he was keeping some looted items under their bed and we arrested him.”

Other suspects arrested for looting were mostly teenagers, while the looted items included bales of cloths, household items, generators, among others

Isah advised residents with some of the looted items to return them to the police or risk arrest.

He noted that the 34 suspects would be prosecuted at the completion of investigation.
