
After nearly six decades of existence, the University of Lagos launched its school anthem on Monday as it prepares to graduate 13,489 students during its 51st convocation ceremonies. Vice Chancellor Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, who briefed the press in Akoka, Lagos, said that finally having an anthem for the institution was a dream come true.
“I am pleased to inform you that the Senate of the University of Lagos has approved an anthem of the University of Lagos which describes the mission, vision and core values of this great citadel of learning.
The anthem will be officially launched today as part of the pre-convocation activities, ”he said. Ogundipe, who congratulated the committee members who worked on the project, said the hymn would now be sung in all official school activities. The chair of the UNILAG anthem committee, Professor Adejoke Oyewunmi, said that the process of writing, composing and developing an anthem for the institution involved the entire university community.
She noted that two previous committees had worked on the project before the creation of its own committee. The VC, while giving a breakdown of those who will graduate in the 2018/2019 season, said that 7,198 students would graduate undergraduate, with 281 having a first class. He added that 6,291 would award degrees and graduate degrees and 112 would receive a doctorate in philosophy. Among the first degree graduates, Alimi Ibrahim Adedeji from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering emerged the best graduate student with the CGPA of 4.98. Popoola Victoria Opeyemi from the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences with the CGPA of 4.90 has become the best graduate student in the humanities. Ogundipe thanked the lively audience, corporations and members of the Alumni Association for their support of the school and called for more.
