The University of Port Harcourt has announced a ban on “pleasure swimming” at the Olympic size swimming pool in the institution.

This followed the death of a student of the Rivers State University in a swimming pool. Spokesman of the institution, Sam Kpenu, who made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday, said the facility will only be opened to professionals.

Kpenu, who confirmed the incident, said the 100 level student of the Faculty of Marine Engineering drowned in the pool located at the Abuja campus of UNIPORT.

The student who hailed from Ogun State, was said to have gone with some of his friends to the pool to swim but drowned in the process.

It was gathered that some police officers who got wind of the incident had arrived the scene and arrested two of his friends for questioning while the corpse had been deposited at the University of Port Harcourt mortuary.

However, when contacted, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police command, Nnamdi Omoni, said the command was not yet aware of the incident.
